Humanitarian situation worsens in Chad, Sudan due to armed conflict

N'djamena, Jul 5 (Prensa Latina) The non-governmental organization International Rescue Committee (IRC) warned about the worsening of humanitarian situation in Sudan and Chad due to the escalation of violence in Darfur.

“This crisis is worse than the last major one experienced twenty years ago in Sudan, underscoring the need for immediate and substantial support,” IRC’s emergency director for Chad, Mwiti Mungania, said in a statement.

He emphasized that the already deteriorating situation in the region is now aggravated by the intensification of long-standing inter-ethnic conflicts affecting the western Sudanese region, which borders the Central African Republic, Chad, South Sudan and Libya.

On this issue, the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) estimates that a total of 250,000 Sudanese could arrive in Chad, during the course of this year.

Mungaina expressed his concern for the worsening of the situation and the horrible stories of violence told by those who manage to escape the spiral of violence and chaos that Sudan has been experiencing since April 15, due to the clashes between the Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
