Cuba’s President urges recovery of damages caused by rains

Canel1
Havana, Aug 15 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel assessed the need to boost the recovery in provinces affected by heavy rains and other weather events.

On Monday, at a meeting held by video conference, the head of State analyzed the effectiveness of the strategies implemented in Cuba’s western-central and eastern province, which were hit by heavy rains that flooded villages, destroyed homes and affected roads and state institutions.

Diaz-Canel acknowledged important processes in the replacement of part of the damaged houses in several territories, but stressed that there are still many rehabilitation actions to be done, which requires greater speed from authorities and the population in each region.

According to a national television report, from western Pinar del Rio province, the President was informed that of the more than 100,000 houses damaged by Hurricane Ian in September 2022, only a little more than 40,000 have been rebuilt.

The figures presented by top Pinar del Río authorities reveal considerable delays, which require more dynamism in the use of construction materials that are manufactured on the territory or arrive there as part of the central government’s allocations.

It was also reported that investments in the water sector in the province contributed to improve the water supply to the population.

New water pipelines were built there and pumping equipment was installed, among other actions, the head of the Water Resources Institute, Antonio Rodríguez, said.

Díaz-Canel called to give prioritized attention to the people who were most affected in all the provinces and for the definitive eradication of the subjective aspects that slow down the recovery process from these natural events.
