Renowned Cuban artist to open personal exhibition in Havana (+Photos)

Havana, Sep 6 (Prensa Latina) Cuban visual artist, Aristides Hernandez (Ares), is mounting his exhibition "Mestizo", which will be inaugurated next Friday at 4:00 p.m. local time at the 23 and 12 St. gallery in Havana.

The show, curated by art critic Meira Marrero, is formed by more than 20 pieces made in Cuba and Brazil, including graphic humor, painting, sculpture, assemblage and installation.

According to Art History professor Odette Bello, they are part of the artist’s most recent production and a summary of his concerns, of the constant process of search and reflection about his identity, about the history that conditions him and has determined the current geopolitical configuration of the world.

The exhibition, open to the public until next October, is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, the National Council of Plastic Arts, the Cuban Fund of Cultural Goods, its art galleries directorate Collage Habana, the 23 and 12 gallery and the Brazilian art institute Sacatar.

Ares (60 years old) is a self-taught artist who works in Havana as an independent creator of graphic humor, illustrations, posters and paintings.

He has published 23 books, illustrated another hundred and won 170 awards at international events, including the Grand Prix of the World Press Cartoon in Portugal and the Ranan Lurie Award of the United Nations. In Cuba, the renowned cartoonist holds the Distinction for National Culture and the National Humor Award. His works are part of private and institutional collections in the five continents.
