Mozambique praises role of science in sustainable development

Havana, Sep 15 (Prensa Latina) Mozambique´s President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi stressed on Friday at the G77+China Summit the role of science, technology and innovation to achieve sustainable development.

I reiterate Mozambique’s intention that the Final Declaration of the Summit be made concrete so that science, technology and innovation are at the service of the sustainable and harmonious development of our countries, said President Nyusi while speaking at the meeting which is being held at the Havana International Conference Center (HICC).

President Nyusi pointed out that the Summit´s main theme Current Development Challenges: The Role of Science, Technology and Innovation, perfectly represents the international situation in which scientific development must be the pivotal tool to overcome difficulties and achieve sustainable development.

Mozambique vows to achieve the objectives set for this Summit, first the main challenges the South faces to achieve sustainable development, especially in the use of science, technology and innovation to guarantee food security, health, new production processes, and to have a healthy environment, President Nyusi said.

He stated his country’s concern about terrorism practices over the African continent, which is exacerbating conflicts and fragilities in our nations, related to armed conflicts between states and the unconstitutional change of government in countries identified with greater relevance in Central and West Africa.

Regarding climate change, President Nyusi said that Mozambique believes that resources and technology will be pivotal tools to achieve better forecasts in the worst areas susceptible to extreme natural phenomena and improve and maximize their capacities in the prevention, mitigation and adaptation to this scourge.

In this regard, he pointed out his country is one of the African nations most exposed to natural events, which cyclically affect its development, resulting in the loss of lives and the destruction of social and economic infrastructure.

“We need more concrete cooperation programs, capable of revolutionizing production methods and systems,” he said.
