Cuba proposes actions to settle Israel-Palestine conflict

Havana, Oct 19 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez on Thursday expressed his country's invariable solidarity with the Palestinian cause and proposed several actions for a broad, fair and lasting solution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

At a press conference, the head of Cuban diplomacy pointed out that this solution requires, inexorably, the exercise of the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to self-determination and to build their own independent and sovereign State within the pre-1967 borders and with their capital in East Jerusalem.

He stressed that this stance has been the historic one within the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the Group of 77 and China, a bloc of which Cuba holds the pro tempo presidency.

“Every moment of impunity, inaction, passivity, double standards or silence will cost more innocent lives. We must act immediately,” the Cuban foreign minister stated.

In this context, he pointed out that the Cuban Foreign Ministry makes an urgent call for a ceasefire and demands an end to the war rhetoric.

It also demands that the Government of the United States do not continue to paralyze the United Nations Security Council by using the undemocratic right of veto to protect the excesses of the Government of Israel.

This demonstrates once again the profound reform that the United Nations needs, he added.

Rodríguez called for the immediate resumption of the emergency special session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where the highest priority must be to achieve the end of violence and the provision of sufficient humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people.

He requested to mobilize, under the coordination of the United Nations, emergency humanitarian aid to address the catastrophic situation in Gaza, while asking all parties involved to facilitate the entry and distribution of this indispensable aid.

Rodríguez also urged the UNGA and the Security Council to take all necessary measures to ensure the international protection of the civilian population.

He called on the different mechanisms of political consultation and international integration, such as the NAM, G77+China, CELAC and others, to play an active role in stopping the escalation of violence.

Cuba will support and contribute in everything within its power to legitimate international reinforcements in order to end the current situation.

He stressed that these proposed measures are specific, concrete, urgent and in accordance with international law and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and repeated the call on the international community to show solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

Rodríguez charged that the current situation is a consequence of 75 years of illegal occupation and the violation of the Palestinian people’s inalienable rights on their own territory.

Furthermore, the impunity with which the Israeli regime acts can only be explained by its confidence that it will not be held accountable for the consequences of its actions and that it has the support of the Government of the United States and its allies.
