The two-day event is being held in Havana’s Convention Center, organized by the National Institute of Territorial Planning and Urbanism of Cuba.
The gathering has the technical assistance of the United Nations Agency for Urban Settlements (UN-Habitat) and the financing of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (COSUDE), as part of the Urban October program.
The theme of the workshop is “Building alliances for a sustainable urban future, following the echoes of the Habitat International Summit of Latin America and the Caribbean” and will be attended by government representatives, as well as representatives of civil society and academia.
The ministerial panels of the meeting will deal with the progress and challenges of national urban policies in Latin America and the Caribbean and the implementation of Cuba’s new urban agenda at the local level.
Other topics will be the comprehensive improvement of neighborhoods and urban regeneration, and planning in the capture of land value.
Likewise, the role of decentralization and local governments in territorial urban development and the role of women in habitat development.
The event will also celebrate World Cities Day, which this year’s theme is ‘Financing a sustainable urban future for all’.
