Popularity grows of new German left-wing formation

Berlin, Jan 30 (Prensa Latina) The recently founded alliance Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) could have up to 18 percent of the votes if federal elections were held today, after the first congress of that party was held, reported the Bavarian daily Merkur.

Experts calculated the possible election results for a federal election and assured the BSW of a guaranteed seven percent, according to the polls.

In addition, it is possible that the newly formed political group could even receive 18 percent of the votes, Merkur notes.

Last Saturday, members of the new coalition met for their first party congress.

Amira Mohamed Ali, a former member of the Left Party, announced that the alliance would represent the entire society, Tagesschau news agency reported.

Some members stated at the party congress that the BSW wants to focus more on social problems and will work for a policy of peace.

The newly formed formation wants to work for a relaxation of German-Russian relations and for importing gas from the Eurasian giant again, the news agency says.

About half of the BSW members were formerly members of the Left Party.

This also applies to the two candidates the formation put forward for this year’s European elections, Tagesschau noted.
