DR deported more than 174,000 Haitian citizens in 2023

Santo Domingo, Mar 13 (Prensa Latina) More than 174,000 Haitians were repatriated from the Dominican Republic in 2023 for failure to comply with immigration measures, according to records from the General Directorate of Immigration.

According to that organization, 174,677 foreigners of different nationalities, including 174,602 Haitians, were repatriated last year.

In addition, 246,678 return to Port-Au-Prince voluntarily, mainly when the Government of President Luis Abinader decided to close the border by air, land and sea in September 2023.

Estimates indicate that between 650,000 and one million Haitians reside in the Dominican Republic.

Regarding criticisms of the detention and deportation of immigrants from the bordering nation, Dominican President Luis Abinader has said, “There is no Dominican solution to the Haitian problem,” and “We cannot do more than what we do.”
