Santiago de Chile, Jul 5 (Prensa Latina) One person died and another was seriously injured when a landmine exploded today on the Chile-Peru border.

According to preliminary information, the explosion occurred when a vehicle set off the device near milestone 15, one kilometer from the Chacalluta border crossing.

Personnel from the Special Operations Group of the Carabineros police arrived at the site to investigate the incident.

Last year six Chilean military personnel were injured in the same area when the truck they were traveling in for fence maintenance duties made contact with an anti-tank mine.

In 1978, dictator Augusto Pinochet ordered the planting of more than 181,000 mines on the borders with Peru, Bolivia and Argentina.

During the last decades, 235 victims of accidents caused by these abandoned explosives have been registered.
