Syria returns its membership to the Arab Civil Aviation Organization

Damascus, Jul 7 (Prensa Latina) After 12 years of freezing its membership, Syria returned to participate in meetings of the General Assembly of the Arab Civil Aviation Organization, the official agency SANA reported.

Syrian Deputy Transport Minister Moatasem Jumaa, speaking in these meetings held in Rabat, the Moroccan capital, urged joint Arab action and called on airlines to resume using Syrian airspace for transit and landing purposes at national airports.

While the director general of the Syrian Civil Aviation Authority, Bassem Mansour, assured that all cooperation and facilities would be offered to Arab airlines wishing to return to their country’s airspace.

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan, and Sudan operate flights to and from Syria, and there are civil aviation routes between Damascus and the capitals of Greece, Russia, and Iran, Mansour explained.

At the end of the General Assembly meetings at the ministerial level, the Arab Civil Aviation Organization elected Syria as a member of the Aviation Safety Committee, considered one of the most important technical committees of the organization.

It also announced the resumption of flights in Syrian airspace after 12 years of interruption, due to the war in this nation.

According to official figures, damage to navigation equipment due to terrorist acts and Israeli attacks exceeded $70 million.
