Colombia: Petro chairs Ministerial Summit on Artificial Intelligence

Bogotá, Aug 8 (Prensa Latina) President Gustavo Petro chaired today the opening day of the Latin American and Caribbean Ministerial Summit on Artificial Intelligence ColombIA, which will take place until tomorrow in Cartagena, north of the country.

According to the president in his speech, the topic merits a political debate and a philosophical, ethical and political discussion of the evolution of technology for the individual.

He pointed out that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has to do with the market because with algorithms there is the possibility that the machine produces through workers much more than before.

“This final debate must focus on the fact that, if humanity is capable of regulating capital to prioritize life, life acquires a guiding axis in politics, ideology and government activity in any country,” he said.

Therefore, he added, in Latin America and the Caribbean we must come together to build on AI. He also said at another point in his speech that it is imperative to link this technology with clean energy.

“If Bitcoin could already produce a surge in demand for oil and coal in the world with the consequences that we already know about the climate crisis, what will be the impact of AI in terms of energy?” he asked.

He insisted that the first proposal would consist of putting teams of experts to study the issue and its implication in Latin American societies.

Secondly, he raised the need to build alternatives to what could be dangerous in this interrelation between the climate crisis and Artificial Intelligence.

Also the Minister of Information and Communications Technologies, Mauricio Lizcano, asked those present to reflect on the role that Latin America plays in AI.

“The world has to listen to the voice of the region, it is time to not only listen to the voices of the advanced countries, it is time for Latin America and the Caribbean to be one voice, and allow us to build a more prosperous, inclusive and sustainable future for all our citizens. May this technology be the transforming engine of our society,” he said.

The Summit will be attended by 22 ministers and nine vice-ministers from 19 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, who will seek common ground on the position that the region should have on the development of AI.

Along with experts from different parts of the world, government leaders will participate in debates, panels and round tables around three thematic axes: Enabling Ecosystems, Education and Governance.
