According to data from the Deter-B system, a Government tool that generates rapid alerts for evidence of changes in forest cover in the Amazon and Cerrado, the area under alert is 4,314.76 square kilometers (km²), the lowest in the historical series that began in 2016.
While in the Cerrado, the second largest biome in Brazil, there was a 9% increase in the same term (7,015 km²).
The aforementioned represents an attrition of almost 46% compared to the previous period. The most accurate deforestation estimates are usually published in November.
In presenting the numbers, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Marina Silva stressed to the press that since the current Government took office, at the beginning of 2023, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva prioritized the zero deforestation agenda for both the Amazon and all Brazilian biomes.
“We already have the plan for the Amazon, we are in the process of implementing the plan for the Cerrado and we are working on plans for the other biomes, as well as on the axes of the plans to confront deforestation,” Lula underscored.
According to the Government, from August 2023 to July 2024 there was a depletion in deforestation in five of the nine states of the Legal Amazon: Rondônia (63%), Amazonas (58%), Acre (54%), Mato Grosso (52%) and Pará (47.7%).
In the case of 70 municipalities of the biome, considered a priority for combatting deforestation and which concentrate more than half of the deforestation in the Amazon, there was a 53% drop in the area under alert at the stage.
