Economy Minister denies recession in Ecuador

Quito, Aug 8 (Prensa Latina) Ecuador’s Minister of Economy Juan Carlos Vega denied there was a domestic recession and, on the contrary, underscored the country is moving towards growth.

“We are recovering from an economic cycle towards a more positive second quarter,” the minister advanced in an interview with the digital Visionarias program after a report of the Central Bank that granted that the country was and would be in recession.

Concerning an eventual economic US crisis, Vega explained that it would have an impact on these lands, although it would influence in lower interest rates and a lower fiscal pressure for Ecuador.

In addition, the authority pointed out that we are entering a weaker dollar, which would make Ecuadorian exports cheaper in the world and thus be more competitive.

Regarding the agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), questioned in the National Assembly–Parliament and possible grounds for an impeachment trial against him, the minister commented that those criticisms “the only thing they seek is to generate a greater crisis, and the incentives are clearly political.” Meanwhile, Parliament’s Transparency Commission recommended to the plenary to declare the debt with the IMF illegitimate, since its purpose is not to finance social spending or investing in the development of economic, social and cultural rights, but to pay external creditors.

In view of the approaching deadline for the August 31 closure of the ITT oil field in the Yasuni National Park, in the Amazon, the minister assured that the Government will responsibly comply with the popular mandate to leave the crude oil underground in that area.
