The Cuban delegation found that these tapes, in 35 mm format, are in a very good state of preservation, and some of them are no longer preserved in Cuba.
Gosfilmofond was the first institution visited by Alonso, who was accompanied by ICAIC President Alexis Triana, Advisor to the Minister, Fernando Rojas, and the Vice President of Cubacine ICAIC, Gladys González.
The Film Fund archives were founded in 1935 and treasures more than 100,000 films from all over the world, and each month they receive several hundred films.
“We are grateful that they have preserved part of our cinematographic heritage, as well as that they take care of the production of an avant-garde cinema such as the Russian one”, the Cuban Minister said at the central archive facilities, where restoration and digitalization works are being carried out.
The Director of the Department of Cinematography of the Russian Ministry of Culture, Dmitri Davidenko, presented Alonso with a copy of “The Blue Lamp” by Roman Karmen.
Davidenko also assured that both Russia and Cuba “are facing a new dawn” in filmmaking, due to U.S. sanctions, and expressed interest in co-productions with filmmakers from the island. Today, Russian cinemas show more than 70% of different national productions.
