Blinken in Haiti, 21st century neocolonialism

Port-au-Prince, Sep 13 (Prensa Latina) U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken spent six hours in Haiti, enough time to show off his neocolonial diplomacy by refreshing the political actors that when Washington orders, it is necessary to comply... and quickly.

Blinken’s attitude during his visit prompted a commentary in the newspaper Le Facteur Haiti, which wrote: “this apparent maintenance of our country under a colonial yoke continues to rejuvenate, renew, redefine or redraw itself. This time, in more insidious and absolutely modern forms”.

Blinken had already ordered Haitians to form a Presidential Transitional Council (CPT), elect a provisional prime minister and establish a Provisional Electoral Council (CEP).

Of the three, they only complied with two, always under pressure from Washington knowing they are governed by Caribbean weather and the endless discord that having a little power here generates.

From his swivel chair in his office he saw that what he said in Haiti was not going as his government had planned, and he had to pack his bags, and come to Port-au-Prince.

The Secretary of State came here to say the last word on the case of three members of the CPT, accused of corruption after asking a bank manager for a million-dollar sum in exchange for keeping their positions.

Blinken held several separate meetings with nine Haitian political leaders at the embassy of the northern country, and sent a very clear message to those involved in the scandal of blackmailing the director of the National Credit Bank.

All of them must be “evacuated” as soon as possible, because in Blinken’s opinion, keeping them in their positions constitutes a distraction that impedes the proper functioning of the CPT and, therefore, blocks the success of the political transition in Haiti, the daily Juno 7 revealed.

However, so that there would be no doubt about his new orders, he warned Haitian political leaders that the White House could impose sanctions on those who try to obstruct the removal of the CPT members.

Blinken also ordered the urgent formation of the CEP, a vital body to hold general elections in 2025, and thus restore the fragile democracy in Haiti.
