Haiti prepares to receive Colombian President Gustavo Petro

Port-au-Prince, Dec 12 (Prensa Latina) Haitian authorities are preparing for the official visit of Colombian President Gustavo Petro to this Caribbean nation.

According to the newspaper Le Nouvelliste, Petro will travel to Jacmel town where El Libertador Simón Bolívar stayed in 1815.

Currently, the governments of Haiti and Colombia are coordinating efforts to combat the illegal trafficking of arms and drugs. Two scourges that are damaging social structures by generating addictions and violence.

The commitment between the South American nation and the so-called Pearl of the Antilles was born during the recent stay of the head of the Presidential Transitional Council, Leslie Voltaire, in Cali, Colombia.

Voltaire discussed this issue with Petro, whose central axis is the route from the north of this Latin American country to the south of Haiti.

The two heads of state – recalled Le National newspaper – agreed to establish police patrols with the security forces of both countries to control this maritime route and to end this practice.

Haiti and Colombia have maintained diplomatic and friendly relations since 1820.

Historical notes indicate that the border between the two nations is an international maritime boundary that runs through the Caribbean Sea and is defined by the Liévano-Brutus treaty, signed on 17 February 1978.

Haiti provided support in the War of Independence of Haiti.
