The former president is facing the after-effects of esophageal cancer and the prescribed radiotherapy treatment, which caused a narrowing that prevents him from eating and drinking, as well as pain.
On Friday, Mujica underwent a new medical intervention, this time scheduled, in which a prosthesis was successfully placed to widen his esophagus, a complement to the gastric tube that was previously placed in September.
According to his personal doctor said to the media, the former president spent the night with some discomfort, although “he is making progress as expected.”
After the therapeutic digestive endoscopy, as the procedure is defined, Mujica will remain at least until tomorrow at the Medical Union of Uruguay’s Assistance Center, in order to evaluate the postoperative result.
On Friday, Pennone described the procedure by endoscopists and anesthesiologists as “excellently performed.”
It is expected that in the next few hours the duct will expand and achieve better transit of food and liquids to the stomach of the leader of the Popular Participation Movement, which is part of the Broad Front.
If this happens as expected, Pepe, as his compatriots call him, will be able to eat orally in better conditions.
