We are living shocking times, said Chilean communist leader

Santiago de Chile, Jan 1 (Prensa Latina) In its traditional meeting with the press, the Communist Party of Chile (PCCh) today addressed global issues such as the genocide in Gaza, the blockade against Cuba and Donald Trump's threats regarding the Panama Canal.

“We are living through shocking times on the international level, because the very existence of the planet is in danger,” said the president of the PCCh, Lautaro Carmona, in the usual meeting on January 1 with national and international media.

He considered the most brutal to be the genocide committed by Israel against the people of Palestine, which in Gaza alone caused more than 45 thousand deaths, mostly women and children.

He recalled that, despite repeated international condemnations, Tel Aviv continues with the aggressions in the occupied territories, which puts the weight of the United Nations in check.

“We are in favor of a political solution to conflicts between states and we will continue to fight for that,” Carmona said.

He recalled that in our hemisphere, the most reprehensible thing is to see how the United States has turned a territory that is building its own project into a sort of laboratory of extermination through a criminal blockade.

“I am referring to Socialist Cuba, which in these hours is demonstrating its dignity, its determination to continue its sovereign path,” he said.

Lautaro Carmona pointed out that the economic, commercial and financial siege affects all sectors of society, including health, and demanded the end of that policy, as well as the exclusion of Cuba from the list of alleged sponsors of terrorism.

“There is no country that, according to the size of its population, contributes more in solidarity in the face of natural disasters. Suffice it to say that in Chile, Cuban medical brigades have been present on three occasions,” he said.

The communist leader declared that fortunately there are people who continue to move forward with their projects, regardless of the North American policy, which will be intensified with the assumption of Donald Trump.

Asked by Prensa Latina about Trump’s threats to regain control of the Panama Canal, he said this intention seems very dangerous and serious because it would mean another intervention in the region.

The United States has no right to the Canal and should also return the Guantanamo base, he said.

In exclusive statements to Prensa Latina, the president of the PCCh also addressed the tensions generated by the Argentine government of Javier Milei in its relations with Chile.

Milei is available to become a provocateur who affects stability, peace and political coexistence anywhere on the continent, but I hope that the friendship between peoples will be stronger, he said.

These and other national issues such as pension reform, the next party congress and the presidential and parliamentary elections were addressed by the PCCh helmsman during the traditional “Caldillo de Congrio”.

This is a dish based on fish and seafood that is part of the culinary culture of Chile and to which the poet Pablo Neruda dedicated an ode.

The meeting was attended by union leaders, parliamentarians, ministers and party and youth communist activists.
