The Mexican Foreign Secretariat stated that the event, which opened on Thursday, is focused on issues such as coordination of actions.
“Given the challenges we face regarding migration, we are meeting in Mexico City to discuss and coordinate actions aimed at protecting the human rights of migrants and preventing abuse and mistreatment,” the text reads.
Also, “managing, from a humanitarian approach, regular, safe, and orderly migration, integrating migrant populations, and enhancing international cooperation to address migration from its structural and circumstantial causes, and in its entire cycle.”
The meeting takes place in a context marked by the ascension of US President-elect Donald Trump to power on January 20. Trump has threatened to conduct massive deportations despite the proven contributions of migrant communities to that nation.
In her usual meeting with journalists, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum, said on Thursday, that her country has drawn up a plan in case the announced expulsions take place.
