Silvio Rodriguez released the song on his YouTube channel, and performed it with a dedication to the former president and his wife, Lucía Topolansky.
“Dear Pepe, this is my greeting from Cuba for you and for Lucía, I composed these verses in 2009, when I heard you say some things, and a few days ago I finished them, motivated by the call of our dear Leon Gieco. An infinite hug,” the singer-songwriter says at the beginning of the video, El Observador reported.
The song portrays the Uruguayan politician and fighter as an emblematic figure in the fight for justice and hope in Latin America, according to the Caras y Caretas website.
Entitled “Más Porvenir” (More Future) expresses hope and the ability to overcome adversity, reflecting the essence of Mujica’s life and struggle, the newspaper said on its digital edition.
In one of its stanzas, Rodríguez sings: “I never dreamed of revenge nor did I prolong laments. I sensed hope behind the shadow of the wind.”
These words seem to portray the spirit of the former head of State, who has championed reconciliation, austerity and love throughout his life as essential principles, the publication added.
“Más porvenir” resonates deeply with the message that Mujica has transmitted throughout his career: life, despite adversity, can and should always be lived with hope and love, Caras y Caretas pointed out, adding that the Cuban singer songwriter’s song sums up this feeling: “Life was in the past, but there is more to come.”
