In an audience granted to the presidents of the Episcopal Commissions for Communication, the Supreme Pontiff called to “tell the stories of good that bad journalism tries to erase, giving space only to evil,” according to a communiqué from the press office of the Holy See.
Evil exists, “it must not be hidden, but it must be agitated, generate questions and answers,” added Francis, who also urged “to make together a review and an examination of conscience,” because “we are all called to verify how and what we communicate,” with a different model “in spirit, in creativity.”
During the meeting, held at the Vatican Apostolic Palace, where he also received the directors of the Communications Offices of the Bishops’ Conferences, the Holy Father pointed out that communicating is not just a tactic, not just a technique.
It is neither a matter of repeating clichés or slogans, nor simply writing press releases, because it must be “an act of love,” he said.
“Communicating is always original” and when we do so we are building bridges, he said, and reflected on “how much we could do together, thanks to the new tools of the digital era, thanks also to Artificial Intelligence, if instead of turning technology into an idol, we would commit ourselves more to networking.”
“I confess something to you: I am more concerned about natural intelligence than artificial intelligence, that which we must develop,” the Pontiff acknowledged.
The Bishop of Rome invited the participants in this event to work in a symphonic way that involves everyone so that communication can transmit harmony and “be a concrete alternative to the new towers of Babel” in which “everyone speaks and does not understand each other.”
