The figures published so far by the National Statistics Institute (INE) show that, although the increase has been sustained since 1996, it increased in 2023.
They also reveal that the growth is present in all age groups.
The percentage of childless women in the 15-19 age group increased from 86% in 1996 to 97% in 2023, which was considered positive in terms of reducing early pregnancy.
At the same time, in the 20-24 age range, it increased from 59% to 79%, and rose from 35% to 55% in the 25-29 age group.
The proportion of childless women in the 30-34 age group increased from 18% to 37 between 1996 and 2023, which represents a little more than a doubling, while it practically doubled among those aged 35-39.
Experts told La Diaria that there are varied factors and interpretations for a phenomenon that the 1996 and 2011 censuses confirmed the very low fertility rate in Uruguay.
