As reported by the state news agency KCNA, the plants are located in the Jangphung County district and were built by a contingent of military builders. With more than 300,000 inhabitants, Kaesong city is subordinated to the central government, as if it were a province.
In 2013, Unesco declared its group of monuments and historical sites a World Heritage Site.
In his speech at the opening of the factories, Kim Yong Gyu, chief secretary of the Workers’ Party Committee (WPK) in the city, highlighted the progress of local industries following the guidelines of the 20×10 policy and the instructions of DPRK leader Kim Jo Un.
The day culminated with an art show and fireworks display as a sign of the new era dawning for Jangphung County and Kaesong City.
Conceived by the general secretary of the WPK and chairman of the State Affairs Committee, the 20×10 policy is to build high-efficiency factories in 20 counties over 10 years, which will eventually cover all 200 counties in which the country is divided.
The implementation will take into account the geophysical conditions and location of the cities and districts, infrastructure, population and other factors that will ensure the good performance of the plants, some of which will be dedicated to the production of food and basic needs.
