In a message posted on his social network account X, the president explained how the widespread hostility of the media against his administration is due to the fact that the news sources are in the hands of the richest men in the nation, for whom the model of exit from neoliberalism that he proposes does not suit them.
“They are the ones who have profited the most from the privatization of public services, roads, health and education. That is why Colombia has seen its social inequality increase, which is its main problem,” he said.
He considered that the belief that markets solve people’s problems, which is the basic thesis of neoliberalism, has failed throughout the world.
He also argued that this is not only because the president of the United States, Donald Trump, is ending free trade but because the climate crisis and the beginning of human extinction is the clear demonstration of its great practical and theoretical failure.
“Neoliberalism has died in the world and that is why my government proposed an agreement to make social reforms to its fundamental laws: health, pensions, labor,” he said.
He stressed that Congress does not want to approve the proposed transformations, which generates permanent friction between the Legislature and the Government.
“The problem is that the congressmen, for the moment, do not see it pertinent to make the reforms and want to keep the country in the chaos of dying neoliberalism,” he added.
On the other hand, he insisted that neoliberal practices, by reducing the capacity of the State and excessively increasing private contracting, generated all kinds of mafias and contracting cartels that finance traditional politics in the country.
“By converting the State and public power into another instance of the market, what has been triggered is a regime of corruption in Colombia that will only be removed with a popular revolution, and I am ready to participate in it to make the Constitution a reality,” he said.
Petro also wrote that the composition of the new cabinet has the purpose of fulfilling government plans and popular mobilization.
“If fulfilling the program implies the broadest popular mobilization and access of the people to all instances of power, it must be done. The purpose is to fulfill and that’s it, Colombia needs it. This is the decisive year,” he said.
