According to Cuba información, on the occasion of the World Day of Action against the Foreign Military Bases, the Catalan organization denounced the use of this territory as a military space and for human rights violation.
It indicated that it constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and an attack against the sovereignty, independence and welfare of the Cuban people.
The note, sent to Prensa Latina by Cubainformación coordinator José Manzaneda, explained that Defensem Cuba’s action is especially relevant in view of the IX International Seminar for Peace and the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases, to be held in May in Guantánamo, Cuba.
The U.S. military presence in Guantánamo hinders the economic and social development of the inhabitants of Guantánamo, while ignoring the will of the Government and the people of Cuba, who have expressed their unanimous rejection of this occupation, the Catalan association remarked.
The Guantanamo Naval Base, established more than 120 years ago by means of an imposed treaty and lacking a time limit on the use of Cuban territory, was the first U.S. base on foreign soil.
