The purpose was to establish a branch of EIGS in Morocco and those involved were arrested after more than a year of monitoring, according to revelations of the Director of the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations, Cherkaui Habub.
Halfway through last week, a communiqué from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) announced the arrests in Casablanca, Fez, Tangier, Azemur and El Aiun, the latter in Moroccan occupied territory in Western Sahara, of a dozen suspected of planning terrorist acts in the Alawite kingdom.
The danger of this cell lies not only in the diversity of the identified targets, but also that it represented a strategic project of EIGS to establish itself in Morocco, adds the official statement.
The suspects received instructions from the EIGS Foreign Operations Commission which formed a special committee in charge of coordinating the terrorist plans, defining their execution and transmitting instructions to the other members, the Moroccan DGSN statement said. So far Morocco is free from actions of Islamist groups operating in several Sahel countries.
