Mexican Senate approves reform to strengthen its sovereignty

Mexico City, Feb 27 (Prensa Latina) In order to strengthen the defence of sovereignty, the Mexican Senate approved a constitutional reform sent by President Claudia Sheinbaum to the Chamber of Deputies.

After the United States designated six cartels as terrorist organizations, which, according to specialists, could be a pretext for an intervention, Sheinbaum sent the project to the Legislature last week.

The proposed modification to article 40 specifies that the people “under no circumstances will accept interventions, interference or any other act from abroad that is harmful to the integrity, independence and sovereignty of the nation.

This includes “coups d’état, interference in elections or the violation of Mexican territory, whether by land, water, sea or airspace”. “Nor will it consent to intervention in any investigation or persecution without the express authorization and collaboration of the Mexican State within the framework of the applicable laws”.

The amendment to Article 19 states that any national or foreigner involved in arms trafficking, and any foreigner who carries out activities related to the paragraphs of Article 40, will be given the most severe possible penalty and the precautionary measure of preventive detention.

According to Senator Enrique Inzunza, president of the Legislative Studies Commission, this reform does not seek to reject international cooperation. “With the leadership of our Head of State, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, Mexico will strengthen collaboration with other nations in its fight against crime. Collaboration yes, subordination no,” he emphasized.
