Vietnam nominated to chair meeting on the rights of the sea

Hanoi, Mar 3 (Prensa Latina) The group of countries in the Asia-Pacific region at the UN reportedly agreed today to nominate Vietnam for the post of Chairman of the 35th SPLOS Meeting.

According to reports, the election to chair the summit of States Parties to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (SPLOS) is expected to be held prior to the conference to be held from June 23-27 next at the UN headquarters in New York, United States.

This would be the first time Vietnam has held the chairmanship of SPLOS since it joined the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1994.

SPLOS is a key forum where State Parties can exchange, discuss and make decisions to improve the implementation of international maritime law legislations.

The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, adopted in 1982 and in force since 1994, is one of the most important achievements of the UN, with 170 member nations.
