Health program in Mexico strengthens care for elderly

Mexico City, Mar 4 (Prensa Latina) The Home by Home Health program, (Salud Casa por Casa) promoted by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, emerges today as a strategy for the comprehensive care of chronic diseases in elderly and people with disabilities.

Referring to the initiative, the Secretary of Health, David Kershenobich, pointed out that it will make it possible to achieve better adherence to treatments and identify conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and symptoms of depression in these people at an early stage.

All this, he added, without the need for these citizens to travel to medical units, since the project contemplates regular visits by doctors and nurses to their homes.

In his opinion, “this approach does not only deal with diseases or health conditions, but promotes prevention, self-care and social support in a comprehensive manner.”

With all this, we hope that the Home by Home program for senior citizens, as it progresses, will help us to reduce the burden of these diseases and that senior citizens will have a better quality of life,’ the head of the program emphasized.

Another purpose is to have programs for the prevention and early detection of ailments in these population groups.

The official emphasized that the initiative will facilitate access to health services in rural or marginalized areas or to people who, due to social determinants such as culture, family patterns, social isolation or other reasons, do not go for medical check-ups.

Kershenobich stressed the relevance of Home by Home Health Program in view of the frequency of high blood pressure in elderly people, which reaches 49.4 percent, and of diabetes mellitus, which affects 35 percent, while cholesterol is present in almost half of them.

Likewise, 20 percent of those over 60 have depressive symptoms, which “has to do with hormonal and brain changes, loss of loved ones, roles and status, as well as economic factors,” he said in a press release.
