On the occasion, members of the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC) laid a wreath at Gómez’s burial site.
Abel Aguilera, from the Secretariat of the Union of Cuban Historians (Unhic), highlighted “the enormous significance of UPEC and Unhic joining forces to pay this well-deserved tribute to Gómez, a prolific anti-imperialist journalist and historian”.
“There are many good reasons to have named after him the national awards UPEC bestows every year on its best writers and reporters. It’s a source of pride to which we should aspire in pursuit of making a better journalism every day’, commented Marlon Y. Martinez, student of Journalism at the University of Havana.
During the ceremony other awards went to winners of the National Historical Journalism Contest of 2024.
UPEC observes Press Day every March 14, to commemorate the founding of Patria newspaper by Cuba’s National Hero, José Martí, in 1892.
The event will last through March 19, featuring an array of relevant activties.
