Putin appoints Alexandr Darchev as Russian Ambassador to US

Moscow, Mar 6 (Prensa Latina) Russian President Vladimir Putin, by decree, appointed Alexander Darchiev, 64, as his country's Ambassador to the United States, the Kremlin press service informed on Thursday.

The document, made public this Thursday, announces Darchiev’s appointment as “the Russian Federation’s Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to the United States of America, and Permanent Observer of the Russian Federation to the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington.”

Darchiev previously served as director of the North American Department in the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Born on May 14, 1960, Darchiev, who graduated in Historical Sciences at Moscow’s Lomonosov University, worked at the Institute of the United States and Canada of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISCRAN) from 1983 to 1992 before starting a diplomatic career.

He served as counselor at the Russian Embassy in Washington from 1997 to 2002, and minister-counselor of that legation from 2005 to 2010. He was an Ambassador to Canada from 2014 to 2021.

Washington gave Moscow its approval for this appointment during the consultations that the two countries’ delegations held in the Turkish city of Istanbul in late February.
