According to data from the Public Health Agency, three of five new infectious cases were confirmed as Ebola, and two are awaiting confirmation, while three hospitals in the capital have already treated several confirmed or suspected cases.
The disease is now spreading in five of Uganda’s 146 districts including Kampala, where the outbreak was declared in January.
Ebola, a contagious disease spread by contact with an infected person’s bodily fluids or contaminated materials, manifests as a deadly hemorrhagic fever.
Symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain and sometimes internal and external bleeding.
In addition to Uganda, outbreaks of viral hemorrhagic fevers have recently appeared in Africa in countries such as Tanzania and Rwanda.
