Ancient Egyptian jewels discovered

Cairo, Mar 8 (Prensa Latina) Archaeologists have recently discovered a collection of jewels dating back to the beginning of the 26th Dynasty, during excavation work in the northwestern part of the Temple of Karnak in Luxor, Egypt.

Among the findings are rings of gold and other metals, small gold amulets (including a statue of the triad of ancient Egyptian deities Amun, Mut and Khonsu) and amulets of deities in the form of animals, a metal brooch and a variety of beads.

They were hidden inside a broken container, which helped keep the treasure in perfect condition, described the Ahram Online publication.

The Karnak Temple is one of the most important and famous complexes in Egypt, with 20 temples and chapels that have provided a great perspective of the religious practices of this ancient territory, reports the Artnews portal.

The work at the site was carried out by the joint Egyptian-French archaeological mission of the Egyptian-French Centre for the Study of the Temples of Karnak in collaboration with the Supreme Council of Antiquities and the French National Centre for Scientific Research.

While several incredible artefacts have been found, the site is an important part of the country’s cultural history, as it is believed to be the place where creation began, as well as the point of interaction between the god Amun-Ra and the ancient Egyptians.

“It is a very important discovery, because it provides a clearer understanding of the historical development of the Karnak temples during the first millennium BC,” Mohamed Ismail Khaled, a director associated with the research on this find, told Ahram Online.

Once the artefacts have been documented and restored, they are scheduled to be displayed at the Luxor Museum.
