Measles cases decrease in Italy

Rome, Mar 15 (Prensa Latina) Italy registered 53 measles cases in February 2025, with a significant reduction of 28.3 percent with respect to the 74 cases reported in the first month of this year, according to an official report.

According to the latest bulletin on the presence of this disease in this European nation, issued by the Higher Institute of Health (Instituto Superior de Sanidad -ISS), the total number of infections detected in the first two months of 2025 amounted to 127, which is equivalent to 12.9 cases per million inhabitants.

This recent analysis issued by the National Measles and Rubella Epidemiological Surveillance Service of the ISS, published on the website of the specialized media Sanita Informazione, also states that the average age of those who contract the disease is 30 years, and 52 percent are young people between 15 and 39 years old.

Specialists are concerned about the high incidence of the disease in the 0 to 4 age group, as well as the fact that eight cases were reported in children under one year old, who were too young to be vaccinated.

In addition, at the moment of infection, 90.4 percent of the patients whose immunization status could be ascertained were unvaccinated.

The number of cases with at least one complication was 37.8 percent, among which pneumonia was the most frequent, accounting for 15 percentage points of the total, and an episode of encephalitis was reported in an unvaccinated young adult, according to the note.

Infections were reported in 15 regions in the first two months of this year, but half of them were concentrated in Sicily, Trentino-Alto Adige and Marche, with incidences of 50.1, 44 and 36.4 cases per million inhabitants, respectively, the source adds.
