Panamanian workers reject social security law

Panama, Mar 15 (Prensa Latina) Workers from various sectors in Panama on Friday rejected Law 163 on the Social Security Fund (CSS) reform and announced actions such as a nationwide strike.

Regarding the approval of the initiative on Thursdat, before in the Legislative, Mario Almanza, spokesman for the Teachers’ Action Front and the National Confederation of Independent Union Unity (Conusi), affirmed that they will defeat this initiative, which is an attack against the working class and retirees, in the streets.

Almanza blamed the lawmakers and the Government for promoting these protests, among them the indefinite work stoppage, or a march next Tuesday to the National Assembly (parliament) to repudiate this norm, which masks the raising of the retirement age and allows the theft of the resources of the CSS by handing them over to the private banks.

On Thursday, the debate on Bill 163, which modifies the Organic Law of the CSS, came to an end with 48 votes in favor and 23 votes against after more than three months of discussion.
