Argentine deputies to analyze crypto scandal and retirements

Buenos Aires, Apr 8 (Prensa Latina) The Argentine Chamber of Deputies will hold a special session to analyze issues such as President Javier Milei's alleged involvement in a cryptocurrency scam, the plight of retirees, and people with disabilities.

Legislators will debate the establishment of a commission to investigate the scandal arising from the president’s posts on social media platforms X and Instagram promoting the $Libra cryptocurrency. Following these posts, he was accused of illicit association, engaging in negotiations incompatible with public office, price manipulation, and financial crimes, among others.

The officials will also address the questioning of officials and the request for reports from the Executive Branch on the case. They will also consider requesting reports on the status of public works, which the government has reduced to almost zero as part of a severe austerity program.

Moreover, the deputies will analyze the declaration of a state of emergency in the area of disability until December 31, 2027, as well as evaluate files on the pension debt payment plan, bills to modify the Integrated Retirement and Pension System, an extraordinary bonus for beneficiaries receiving minimum wages, an increase in those benefits, and financial compensation for senior citizens.

The session will occur the day before a march defending retirees’ rights, featuring members of the General Confederation of Labor and other trade unions.

The demonstration will kick off a 36-hour general strike, the second day of which will take place on Thursday.
