CELAC Foreign Ministers finalize documents for presidential approval

Tegucigalpa, Apr 8 (Prensa Latina) The foreign ministers of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) will finalize the documents that the presidents of the political coordination mechanism will approve tomorrow during their 9th Summit in Honduras.

Following the last meeting held by the national coordinators under the Honduran pro tempore presidency (PPT), this Tuesday the foreign ministers of the bloc’s 33 member countries, will finalize the resolutions for the presidents to ratify.

The Deputy Foreign Minister and PPT coordinator, Gerardo Torres, emphasized that the regional organization’s experts held 16 meetings. “It was a year of hard work, and tomorrow we will deliver a very complete folder of documents to our foreign ministers for their approval, and then on Wednesday to our heads of state,” he emphasized.

Torres emphasized that the most important legacy of this process is the reaffirmation of the ideal of regional integration: “The most vital thing is Our America, Our Great Homeland,” he expressed, alluding to the spirit of Latin American and Caribbean unity that inspires CELAC.

The delivery of agreed-upon documents, including the so-called Tegucigalpa Declaration, marks a crucial step toward the 9th Summit, in which a dozen dignitaries and representatives from the 33 nations, will define the strategic guidelines for the future of the region.

According to Honduran Foreign Minister Enrique Reina, one of the primary achievements of the pro tempore presidency of President Xiomara Castro is maintaining the unity of CELAC, despite existing ideological differences.

Reina, Speaking on Monday at a televised forum, said that all countries are represented in the intergovernmental mechanism, each with its own vision. “Latin America and the Caribbean have progressive, centrist, and right-wing governments, but all actively participate,” the foreign minister stated, emphasizing the region’s ideological diversity.

He also stated that Castro will transfer this Wednesday to Colombian President Gustavo Petro a “living, active CELAC,” with meeting points on major regional challenges, such as natural disasters, migration, food security, and energy.
