Spokesman Lin Jian responded in this way to the question of whether there would be negotiations between the two nations. According to the spokesperson, if the US side truly wants to talk, it must adopt an attitude of equality, respect, and reciprocity. “If the United States disregards the interests of the two countries and the international community and insists on waging a tariff war and a trade war, China will accompany it to the end,” he added.
A similar statement was previously released by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, in which it also rejected Trump’s threats to impose new 50 percent tariffs on all Chinese products.
According to the Chinese authorities, if these measures are implemented, China will take decisive action to defend its rights and interests. “The so-called ‘reciprocal’ tariffs imposed by the United States are groundless and constitute a unilateral and abusive practice,” the statement added.
In Beijing’s view, Washington’s new escalation is a further mistake that reveals its coercive nature, something China will not accept under any circumstances.
The Ministry emphasized that a trade war has no winners and that protectionism has no future. “Pressure and threats are not the right way to deal with China,” the statement emphasizes. Trump threatened further measures following the 34 percent tariffs announced by China on the United States, which were Beijing’s response to Trump’s “reciprocal” tariffs.
Despite the escalation of the tariff war, the Chinese government reaffirmed its commitment to opening up the country’s economy and creating a favorable and protected environment for foreign investment, including that from American companies.
