A UNHCR statement detailed that the above figure was based on data collected by Syrian, Turkish, Lebanese, Jordanian, Iraqi, and Egyptian authorities between December 8, 2024, and April 17.
The return of approximately one million internally displaced persons to their homes was also documented, including 188,000 from refugee camps.
According to the report, 33,000 families had voluntarily returned to Syria from Turkey as of April 13.
On the contrary, the Commission documented the displacement of more than 33,000 people from the Syrian governorates of Tartous, Latakia, Homs, and Hama to northern Lebanon in early March as a result of hostilities.
A recent survey conducted by UNHCR showed that 80 percent of a random sample of 4,500 Syrian refugees in Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon, Iraq, and Egypt aspire to return to their home country soon.
According to reports, approximately 5.5 million Syrian refugees residing abroad have expressed a desire to return home.
Over the past 13 years, Syria has witnessed the largest displacement movement in the world, with some six million refugees in neighboring countries such as Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan, in addition to European countries, while seven million are displaced within the country.
Most want to return to their homeland but are waiting for an improvement in internal conditions to make this return possible.
