On Monday, the head of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti, Maria Isabel Salvador urged Member States to support the Humanitarian Response Plan 2025 for the Caribbean nation plunged into chaos.
Salvador called for vital assistance, especially for women and children, and to promote social peace.
Haiti is close to a point of no return in the face of insecurity, she said during a United Nations Security Council working session on the security situation in Haiti yesterday.
Member States must help increase their support to Haiti’s security forces, as current efforts are not enough to eradicate gangs, Salvador emphasized, as quoted by local radio.
She described as indiscriminate the violence exercised by criminal groups, particularly in the communes of Port-au-Prince, Kenscoff and Mirebalais.
The gangs – in her opinion – seek to strengthen their power, take control of institutions and create a climate of terror in the country.
However, without rapid, decisive and concrete international assistance, the security situation in Haiti is likely to further deteriorate.
The country could fall into total chaos,’ Salvador sentenced.
