Mexico to analyze initiative against foreign propaganda

Mexico City, Apr 23 (Prensa Latina) Here’s the English translation of the Spanish text:

**Senate to Review Initiative Against Foreign Propaganda in Mexico**

Mexico City, April 23 (Prensa Latina) – The Senate is expected to review today an initiative sent by President Claudia Sheinbaum to ban the dissemination of foreign propaganda in Mexico, as announced by Gerardo Fernández, president of the Board of Directors.

Fernández expressed confidence that the proposal would be approved unanimously, as it seeks to reinstate a provision that was previously part of the law.

The move comes after several private media outlets aired an advertisement by U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem targeting migrants. On Monday, Sheinbaum announced the decision to restore an article that had been removed during the administration of Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018).

“This is part of the reforms we will be submitting. Today or tomorrow, they will be sent to Congress to ensure that no foreign government or entity can pay to broadcast these ads—this propaganda with discriminatory messages,” she emphasized.

Fernández described the U.S. government’s campaign, disseminated in Mexican media—particularly on television—against migrants as “a foolish intrusion,” utterly racist, classist, and disgraceful.

In his view, Washington forgets that migrants, not only from Mexico but from around the world, have contributed to the wealth of the United States and that no human being is “illegal.”

“Today it’s migrants; tomorrow, it could be any issue. That is unacceptable. The United States would never accept the Mexican government sending messages referring to its people, to those who have migrated,” he stressed in remarks quoted in a Senate press release.

Amid the controversial immigration policies of the Donald Trump administration and threats of mass deportations, the Mexican government has repeatedly reaffirmed its support for its citizens living in the neighboring country.
