Uruguay is armored against money laundering and organized crime

Montevideo, Apr 23 (Prensa Latina) The government of Uruguay today prepares amendments to the anti-money laundering law and created by decree an agency responsible for coordinating all policies to combat drug trafficking and organized crime.

The Prosecretary of the Presidency, Jorge Díaz, said that it is a system made up of departments and offices of the Ministries of the Interior, Defense, Education, Economy and the Presidential Office.

Diaz criticized the work of President Luis Lacalle Pou’s previous administration, and mentioned the collusion in the delivery of a passport to Uruguayan drug trafficker Sebastian Marset, now a fugitive from justice and with a red card from Interpol.

At the beginning of the month the National Secretariat for the Fight against Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism (Senaclaft) published the List of Politically Exposed Persons.

They are those who perform or have performed in the last five years important public functions in the country or abroad.

It includes heads of state or government, senior politicians, government, judicial or military officials of high rank, deputies and senators, prominent leaders of political parties, directors and senior executives of state-owned companies and other public entities.

Also those who hold or have held in the last five years senior positions in international organizations.
