Astiasarán, who is participating in the event being held in the Azerbaijani capital on behalf of the Cuban Association of the United Nations (ACNU), also condemned the impact of the US blockade against her country and described it as a violation of human rights.
The Caribbean nation’s ambassador to Azerbaijan, Carlos Valdes, told Prensa Latina that the official, speaking on Tuesday at the panel “No more double standards: NGOs as catalysts for a fair development in the Global South”, added that the blockade affects sustainable development.
He also addressed the challenges faced by developing countries as a result of centuries of colonialism, the transatlantic slave trade, and the exploitation of natural and human resources, and the need to adopt reparation measures.
Astiasarán, in turn, stressed the importance of addressing development in a comprehensive manner, but reinforcing actions to eliminate poverty, illiteracy, and the realization of health and education.
She also mentioned that this is influenced by the unjust and unbalanced international economic order, the role of international financial institutions and the challenges of achieving financing for development.
