According to a previous statement of the regional organization, it is based on the recent holding of presidential elections in the Central African state after the coup d’état of 2023 that overthrew the then ruler Ali Bongo.
The Gabonese Foreign Minister, Mochel Régis Onanga, conveyed to the AU the gratitude of the elected president General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, for reintegrating Gabon into the AU”s community of nations.
Oligui Nguema won the presidential elections held last April 12 by a wide margin over six other contenders, obtaining more than 90% of the votes in dispute.
The new ruler, 50 years old, who headed a military junta that removed former president Bongo from power, assured in his victory speech that he will govern for all Gabonese and will restore constitutionality.
The media pointed out that Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger are suspended by the African Union for not having yet installed civilian governments.
