Russia corrects Trump on winning WWII

Moscow, May 3 (Prensa Latina) Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has reminded US President Donald Trump of former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's recognition of the Soviet contribution to the defeat of fascism.

Zakharova quoted Roosevelt, who described the contribution of the Soviet Union (USSR) and the Red Army as decisive in the defeat of Nazi Germany, in response to Trump’s remarks about victory in World War II.

Following Trump’s remarks, saying no one did more than the US in WWII, the spokesperson wrote on her Telegram channel that it was President Roosevelt who acknowledged that Russian troops destroyed more personnel, aircraft, tanks, and weapons of the common enemy than all other United Nations combined. She also recalled that Roosevelt congratulated Joseph Stalin in a letter dated February 4th, 1943, on his victory in the Battle of Stalingrad.

In another letter dated February 22nd, 1943, Roosevelt praised the skillful leadership of the Red Army and the organization and determination of the Soviet soldiers. He also noted that the Red Army and the people of the USSR “earned the enduring admiration of the people of the United States.”

This Friday, current US President Donald Trump announced that May 8th will be declared VE Day in the United States, and November 11th will be VE Day in World War I. He also said that the United States surpassed all countries in military skill and courage in World War II.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, for his part, emphasized in a meeting with participants of the “First” knowledge marathon that victory in the Great Patriotic War is a triumph for the entire Soviet and Russian people.
