Speaking about the event that brings together representatives from 10 countries until May 15, Ethiopian Tourism Minister Selamawit Kassa Ethiopian Tourism Minister Selamawit Kassa told Fana Broadcasting Corporation that the country is working in partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to address existing gaps.
Kassa mentioned actions on awareness, coordination, and sectoral capacity because, despite the continent’s vast geological potential, only two African countries (Tanzania and Morocco) have geoparks registered with that specialized agency, reflecting the sector’s underdevelopment.
The tourism minister pointed out that although Ethiopia does not have inscriptions in that section, it has recognized geoparks and registered 12 tangible heritage sites, six intangible heritage elements, and five protected biosphere reserves.
She revealed that a new national tourism policy, expected to be approved soon, will pay special attention to geotourism, facilitate the establishment of geoparks, and strengthen conservation and promotion initiatives.
Under the theme, “The Role of UNESCO Global Geoparks and Geotourism for Sustainable Development,” the regional workshop attracted representatives from East Africa and other regions, including high-level experts in tourism, culture, management, and representatives of the UN agency.
