Italy and Greece’s foreign ministers agree to strengthen relations

Rome, May 13 (Prensa Latina) Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her Greek counterpart, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, presided over the 2nd Intergovernmental Summit in Rome, in which significant cooperation agreements were signed, a press release stressed on Tuesday.

A release from the Council of Ministers’ Presidency indicates that at the meeting held in Villa Doria Pamphilj on Monday, both leaders signed a Joint Declaration which, according to Meloni, contains a “work program to continue working on shared objectives and priorities.”

At the end of this meeting, the second of its kind after one held in the Greek city of Corfu in 2017, the Italian prime minister highlighted the coincidence of criteria with Mitsotakis “on issues such as defense, security, and the fight against illegal immigration.”

The head of Government emphasized that Italy and Greece “share the same geostrategic projection in the Mediterranean,” as well as membership in both the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

During the talks, they discussed the negotiation process to end the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, and the importance of the possible holding of a high-level contact between senior representatives of the two sides, scheduled for Thursday in Istanbul, Turkiye.

The two nations also discussed the conflict in the Middle East, where, due to Israeli attacks, some 50,000 Palestinians have already died in Gaza. They agreed to continue “working to achieve an end to hostilities and humanitarian access” to the population of the Strip.
