The dead ones under the emergency regime in force since March 27, 2022 and extended for 38 times, are part of the nearly 86 thousand detained in the country’s prisons for being members or alleged collaborators of gangs.
“We regret to report the 396th mortal victim of El Salvador’s penal system, 396 Salvadorans who have died under the tutelage of the State without having been heard and defeated in trial,” the group said in its X account.
The reports said that 94 percent of the prisoners did not have a gang profile and died without being brought before a judge after their capture.
“It is not normal for people to die without the right to be heard and defeated in court. The prison system in El Salvador is cruel and inhumane, it must be investigated,” said the director of Socorro Jurídico, Ingrid Escobar.
