These statements are an encouraging step towards ending the suffering of the Syrian people, the Foreign Ministry said in a press release published today on its Telegram channel.
The note clarified that “while these sanctions contributed to the fall of the Al-Asad regime, they now directly affect the Syrian people and hinder the process of recovery and reconstruction.”
It added that the people yearn for the full lifting of sanctions as part of measures that support peace and well-being in Syria and the region, and pave the way for constructive international cooperation that promotes stability and development.
U.S. President Donald Trump had hinted the day before about the possibility of lifting sanctions against Syria, in response to demands from several regional leaders, including Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan.
We are considering turning a new page with Syria by easing sanctions, Trump said, and clarified that he is working with Erdogan on this issue and will make a decision on the matter very soon.
