Marti, Cuba’s National Hero, Remembered in Egypt

Cairo, May 19 (Prensa Latina) Cubans, Latin Americans and Egyptians commemorated the 130th anniversary of the killing in action of Jose Marti, while fighting for the country's independence.

Representatives of the diplomatic corps, of Egyptian political parties, and friends of the Caribbean country gathered in front of a bust of Marti in Cairo to remember him, and pay tribute to someone considered the most universal of all Cubans.

“We gathered to pay well-deserved tribute to Marti, for the validity of his political and social thought and the depth of his ideas,” said the Cuban ambassador to Egypt, Alexander Pellicer.

He added that Cuba’s National Hero was a man of letters who went ahead his time, but that he never hesitated to sacrifice his intellectual vocation to fight for the freedom of his homeland, and that he remained faithful to his ideas until he died in the battlefield.

The diplomat emphasized that with his physical departure, “the great organizer and ideologist of the Revolution sadly came to an end… but left behind a vast literary and political body of work, and a legacy that continues today.”

Marti was a great Latin Americanist and a faithful follower of the ideas of the Libertador Simon Bolivar and other heroes of our America, he asserted.

Pellicer also detailed his work as a writer, diplomat, and statesman, as well as his desire to unite the Latin American peoples in a great homeland.

For his part, Ashraf Mounir, director of the Americas at the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, highlighted the legacy of the Cuban hero and the ties between the two nations in various areas.

As an example of these ties, he cited the historic relationship between former President Gamal Abdel Nasser and the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.
